Nick Haeffner's 'The Great Indoors' is a great, lost, quintessentially English project. Echoes of Nick Drake, Kevin Ayers, John Cale, Pink Floyd and Robert Fripp loom large, but Haeffner's originality eclipses his folk, psych- and art-rock influences. There's a deftness, a lightness of touch here that is delightful. Vocally, he's no Caruso, but if you like Eno's vocal work, you'll love this. 'Steel Grey', 'Don't Be Late', and the title track are classic pastoral meditations. The album was recorded in the late eighties, but hasn't dated and is ripe for re-evaluation.
