Luísa Sobral, the Portuguese jazz sensation, is back with another album. After the unprecedented success of 2011?s The Cherry On My Cake, her debut album, the 26 year old singer-songwriter now presents There’s a Flower in my Bedroom. This album provides a rich combination of music genres that are pleasing to the ear of both jazz lovers and overall music fanatics.
Her sumptuous blend of soul, jazz and pop has been well received all over the world, not just in her country of origin. With songs in Portuguese, English and even Spanish, Luísa has proven that she is a force to be reckoned with. Her sharp and vivid lyrics are paired with fresh and breezy melodies, much like her bubbly personality.
Since 2011, the performer has been gracing many stages all over the world, showcasing her unique musicality and magnificent voice, reminiscent of great singers like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, whom she lists as some of her inspirations. Her wide-raging talent has given her the opportunity to appear in Jools Holland’s show in 2012, making her the first ever Portuguese musician to grace the highly praised BBC production. The year also saw her collaborating with Alejandro Sanz (“Bailo Con Vos”) and David Fonseca (“It Shall Pass”).
Her newest album is also graced with the mastery of some very special guests. Jamie Cullum, Britain’s very own ‘Sinatra in Sneakers’, features in the nostalgic and mellow She Walked Down The Aisle, lending his deep voice to a wonderfully crafted track. António Zambujo, fado singer and composer, duets with Luísa in Inês, while Mário Laginha, contemporary jazz composer, plays the piano in the track The Last One.
So if you’re looking for some accessible jazz music, or just fancy lending your ears to something new, Luisa Sobral is the girl for you.
